Feline IBD is chronic intestinal inflammation. Diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss are main symptoms. Exact causes are unclear but involve food sensitivity, immune dysfunction, and bacterial overgrowth.

IBD Symptoms

  • Chronic diarrhea (irregular stools)
  • Recurrent vomiting
  • Weight loss despite normal appetite
  • Bloody or mucous stools

Diagnosis

Blood tests, fecal analysis, ultrasound, endoscopy, and biopsy confirm diagnosis. Differentiation from other GI diseases is important.

Dietary Management

Limited ingredient diets (novel proteins) or digestive enzyme supplements help. Some cats respond to hypoallergenic prescription diets.

Medication

  • Probiotics and prebiotics
  • Steroids (prednisone)
  • Immunomodulators: Chlorambucil is preferred for feline IBD. ⚠️ Azathioprine is limited in cats due to bone marrow toxicity risk.
  • Antibiotics (for bacterial overgrowth)
